Q & A with our New Edition NZ Pumpd product designers, Chris & Jono

Chris & Jono are the ones charged with turning our product ideas into reality!

Chris has been a product designer since 2007, previously designing award-winning furniture and homewares. He is also a devoted husband and proud father of two boys, so he knows a thing or two about breastfeeding which gives him some inside info for helping us with make safe, high quality products that help to simplify and normalise breastfeeding.

Jono has worked in the New Zealand and international design industry since 2004. He’s won a Red Dot Design Award and been involved with 80+ other award-winning design projects. And now, thanks to Pumpd and being a new dad himself, he’s also a silicone breast pump design expert!

We chatted to both designers about creating such an epic product, and special design elements that make Pumpd stand out from other breast pumps on the market....

You’ve been working in the product design space for some time but on a variety of different projects, what interested you about the concept of designing a NZ Made breast pump?

Chris
It was a unique challenge, while I have had experience designing injection moulded products I had not really worked in silicone before so I was intrigued by its material properties and the design opportunities it presented. I am also a father of two boys (6/3) so I have some recent experience as my wife breastfed both boys and felt I had something beneficial to add.

How did your experience as a dad and being alongside your partner’s breastfeeding journey influence your understanding of how best to design Pumpd?

Chris
It gave me great insight into what works and what can be improved to make the whole process easier. Breastfeeding is a magical moment between mum and baby but it's not always a glamorous process. I wanted to make sure that the pump was simple and reliable to use so it was one less thing to think about. The person who said there is no point crying over spilt milk obviously wasn’t talking about breast feeding.

Jono
Louis was born 2 weeks after Pumpd launched, so I turned up at Birthcare with a breast pump I’d help design!

What are some special design elements that make Pumpd stand out from other breast pumps on the market?

Chris
From the outset we wanted to create a pump that was unique yet familiar at the same time, with soft lines and an almost Dr Seuss-esque form. The wide base and low centre of gravity make it very stable when full, and we spent a lot of time ensuring the ergonomics of the pump felt good in the hand, and more importantly, on the breast. Another key feature is that it is mono-material product (lid and body made from the same material). This presented challenges but also provided interesting opportunities with texture and embossing, with volume markings that wont wash off, and a frosted finish that prevents the nipple from being seen when in use.

Jono
The form defines the product, it works in harmony with you, it explains itself.

Are there any differences with designing and making a product, such as Pumpd, entirely in NZ, versus making it overseas?

Chris
Having the manufacturer in close proximity is a huge advantage. There was a lot of back and forth with the manufacturer during the design process so we had an intimate understanding of the capabilities and constraints of the manufacturing process. The fact that we could also just jump in the car to check on samples and give instant feedback during the initial product runs sped the process up greatly.

Jono
Pumpd is the one of first products of its kind to be made in NZ for a very long time, and I see it sitting next to other proud NZ made products to support our local economy. Products made in NZ, supporting NZ families, bring our country closer together.
